~ C's 7 Point Book Critique ~

Ratings Explained...

Individual ratings on the 7 points covered are a consideration of the final rating, but there are other factors which take precedence as indicated in point 7 "Overall Assessment". Therefore, a book with one, or more lower ratings may still receive a higher final rating than a book with relatively higher ratings on all 7 points. It all depends on the significance of the particular category, i.e., a book with a 3 for back cover could still be rated a 7 overall as the book may be so good that the back cover becomes a non-factor.

Ratings range from 1 - 7 points with 7 being the highest. Individual ratings are explained in each point of the critique. Overall ratings are as follows:

Overall

Rating

Overall Assessment/Final Rating Individual

Rating

Individual Assessment
7

Excellent book! Highly Recommends! No noteworthy flaws in structure, content, writing style, or design. Book is fully capable of bestseller status on a legitimate level! Author is on track to longevity, prosperity and success.

7

Excellent! Flawless! No areas of concern found. Very professional.

6

Great book! Highly Recommends! Could use some touching up in specific areas as indicated in critique, however no major areas of concern were found. Items pointed out may, or may not effect overall sales, or success, but are moreso for the author's consideration for growth on future projects. Book is fully capable of bestseller status on a legitimate level!

6

Great! No major areas of concern. Minor areas most likely will not effect overall sales & success of book, but were noted for author's consideration. Very professional

5

Good book! Would recommend. Could use improvements as indicated in critique. Author and book have potential to be better if they take critique seriously. However, they may still find success and a sizable audience without changes. Could even see best seller status. However, individual growth is highly possible and encouraged. With this type of potential, author should desire to reach the next level and should have no problems doing so.

5

Good. Minor areas of concerns, but many. Author may want to consider changes for current & future works. May, or may not effect sales.

4

Good book! May recommend depending upon which specifics caused the lower score. May contain critiques on matters such as writing style, storyline, too many grammatical errors, etc... Not all readers require the same level of readability, details, etc., therefore, a rating of 4 is still considered a good book. Could reach best seller status, but may not do so on a large enough scale, or encourage purchase of future books.

4

Good. Major concerns, but only a few. May effect sales & success for author and book. May want to hire a professional.

3

Alright book. Author and book has potential, but overall project is lacking on a number of relevant points. Author should seriously consider matters expressed in critique as it could be a determining factor in their longevity, prosperity and overall success in the literary realm.

3

Fair. Areas of concern are major and many. Could definitely effect overall sales, success of future projects, and author's reputation. Should hire a professional.

2

Author and book have potential for a successful career in the literary realm, but needs to  be much better. If author takes critique seriously and makes relevant changes, I could see the next project being much better. However, if possible, changes should be made to this book so that readers can see author's potential for growth which may encourage purchase of future projects.

2

Fair. Areas of concern are major and far too many. Would definitely effect overall sales, success of future projects, and author's reputation. Take classes, or hire a professional.

This is a rare score. In my many years as an avid reader, I have yet to see a book that had little, to no potential for success on any level. I've read books that I felt were not up to par, but still made the best seller's list. Keep in mind that being a best seller does not guarantee the financial success serious author's hope to achieve. You may just know enough people, have a large enough group of family and friends, and be a nice enough person to sell books based on that.  However, the goal of writers considering a career is financial success which means selling enough books to enough people outside your realm, city, state, etc. To sell hundreds of thousands of books, you will need to study the craft and be serious about what you put out for the world to see and judge. And, judge they most certainly will since they spent their hard earned money to buy it.

I seriously recommend writing classes, a professional editor, and manuscript assessment by a professional before submitting for production.

1

Poor. Areas of concern are major, extreme, and far too many. Rarely will a score this low be given. Past experiences has shown that anyone who takes the time to write a book, will put forth a decent measure of effort at least to the level of their ability.  Therefore, to score this low indicates either someone who should not consider writing as a career, or does not take their writing seriously. Get help on this particular area by taking multiple classes, or hire a professional.
